Adult Children
(say what? Ana, isn’t that an oxymoron?)
We all eventually grow up and become mature versions of ourselves. We start our careers, move away, and begin our own journey into parenthood.
As the years pass us by, we see less and less of the people that used to be such huge parts of our lives. There seems to be less and less time in the day for catch-ups. And daily visits turn into monthly phone calls.
But neither time, nor distance can break the bond between children and their parents.
And when we get together, like old friends, we pick up right where we left off!
We go back to a place where it was ok to cry about getting a splinter in your finger. We enter those familiar rooms where food magically appears in front of us when we are hungry. We sip hot tea and spend hours talking about our goods and our not-so-goods, without feeling guilty or judged.
Only with our parents, can we have the freedom of being children.
It brings me so much joy to meet families that love and cherish one another. That truly love spending time together, and make an effort to do so regularly.
The Redekops are one of those families:
Meet Magdalene
One day, Magdalene (Maggie) woke up and decided that this year she would give herself a special, one-of-a-kind birthday gift.
It wasn’t a trip to Peru. Or even a Spa Day with the girls.
Magdalene wanted to give herself the gift of time. Time with the people that mean the world to her – her incredible children!
She called me up and arranged for a family portrait with her adult children.
What a wonderful idea, I thought…
Until I found out that she was uncomfortable getting her photos taken. This meant that after so many years of sharing incredible moments together, she didn’t have very many photographs of herself with her gorgeous kids.
That had to change, and I was happy to help!
To ease her nervousness, we picked a calm and serene location that was very dear to her heart – High Park. This was where her young kiddos used to spend every Sunday with their dad, walking along the Grenadier Pond.
And after about an hour of getting her photos taken (something she used to refer to as “torture”) and lots of laughs, we ended up with portraits that truly show the love that this family has for one another. Mere seconds in time that will, forever, be remembered and loved by Maggie and her children.
Happy Birthday, Maggie!
I’m so happy to have met you! :)
